Skin deep

This is very interesting to me observing the, what seems like, hundreds of Facebook posts and all around celebrations by Asians of all sorts, about Korea defeating Greece in the world cup. It would appear to me that these people are supporting Korea merely on the fact that they are an Asian country, which made me wonder if Greece's neighbours or people around the world with similar complexion would be cheering for Greece purely on the appearance of their players......I think not?

I think that cheering exclusively for Asians because you're an Asian is like screaming out "WHITE POWER!" in support of all whites or light coloured people purely based on their skin colour and appearance. "Asian Pride" = White Power, they have the exact same meaning, discrimination based on ethnicity or physical appearance.

Studying my international relations unit "Nationality, ethnicity and conflict" has got me thinking about these sorta issues. I was going to post this on Facebook in response to all the posts but I don't want to bring everyone down with my critical social commentary XD.

What do you think about it all?

You don't think it has anything to do with the fact that Korea was the underdog and expected to lose? :)

That may be a small element of it but posts such as GO ASIAN say something else XD!

I'm not asian and i wanted South Korea to win. They were the underdog and to beat Greece was pretty awesome.

is like screaming out "WHITE POWER!"
I didn't watch the match as I'm totally not interested but I agree that it's also a form of bias if someone supports a team purely out of ethnic preference (of course home country support is different). However if they were supporting Korea for reasons other than that then it's ok =3 For me it's pretty awesome considering the Asian teams usually don't get very far in sports like these but I don't feel like the whole 'asians can do it too!'

Mmm, I feel that the overall history of white supremacy and awareness of this means that people of all other colours racially discriminating is looked.

This form of racism isn't malicious, might just be silly sometimes if people saying things like "Yay! Asians are the best!" or something like that.

I get what your saying here. I was happy to see them win cos they played better in the match. But to support them only cos they are asian is a bit yeh......People should focus on how they played and saying things like that just creates segregation. It shouldnt matter what race people are. I dont cheer on any team thats not my own country just for their appearance. But oh well some people are just like that and probably dont even realise how its coming across to others.

Yeah ^^!

Mhmm, Asian people do that a lot with lots of things, they (not all of course but lots) like to think Asian people are better which shits me X3 but lots of people around the world think they're the best so it's natural for them.

They have no idea and are too deep into this racial thinking to understand the sentiment =P

Yeah I agree with you totally. You already know where I stand on this haha. I don't think that the people doing it realise that it might come across racist but I'm sure if I was on there saying GO WHITEY it would be the first conclusion people would jump to xD <- Worded badly but whatever XD I'm waiting for the OZ game... GO MULTICULTURALISTS!! WOO.
Jun. 13th, 2010 02:34 pm (UTC)
Yes, Go Whitey would be amusing though, no one ever says that XD!

What would be ideal is a world without allegiances and biases towards each other, EXCEPT in the field of sport where the Italian football team can go and *&%$!@# XD.

Yay go multiculturalists! XD

It's shocking that people find the perfect excuse in the World Cup to show their 'pride'.

I think it's okay to be passionate about the squads, but extremes are never good.

Go multiculturalists :D!!

Well they're like that for everything really.
